Elizabeth "Bett" Smith Jones (Desmone), age 72, passed away on December 7, 2021, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dudley Smith and Verta T. Smith, and her brother, Dudley T. Smith.

Curtis of Knoxville, Tennessee; son, Bryan A. Jones of Wise, Virginia; sister, Mary Lou Burch of Griffin, Georgia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Don Dealing of Barnes, Wisconsin; and sister-in-law, Angela Smith of College Station, Texas.

Bett was born in Washington D.C., and grew up on a family farm in southern Maryland, where she developed her love for animals, gardening, and farm life. She graduated Ohio Wesleyan University as Phi Beta Kappa, majoring in microbiology and botany, before moving to Tennessee to be close to her sister. Ms. Jones attended law school at the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif, served as Editor of the Law Review, and graduated at the top of her class. She did this in only 23 months and as one of only a few women. She had a distinguished law career in Bristol, both Virginia and Tennessee, focusing on Real Estate and Commercial law, and was considered a historian of the southwest Virginia area. Bett excelled in mentorship, especially to young women in the legal field, and enjoyed pro bono estate planning for families in the local area. Bett especially loved gardening and farming, and spending time on the farm with her husband and family.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ballad Health Cancer Center in Abingdon, Va.; the staff at Rehab Center and Memory Care at Bristol; and companion and friend Sue Smith of Bristol, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be sent to the Children's Advocacy Center of Highlands Community Services, 21451 Sugar Hollow Road, Bristol VA 24202.
