I often sat across from Alan at the long wooden tables that were the study area in Slocum. It was quiet. It was olde and it simply felt like a place of learning.  If I recall correctly,  Alan had done a semester internship in Washington, D.C. I think he was interested in law school. He had been a lifeguard in the summer. He developed what was described as "Childhood  leukemia" and he left us.  And I still sat in Slocum and stared across the table from time to time... while I was studying history and writing my paper on "German Americans in Ohio between the World Wars."
